Treatments  If you are not a seasoned goat owner call your veterinarian if you have a sick animal.  The information on this page was taken from the Hoegger Goat Supply 2004 catalog.  I just recapped it so you could use it as a quick reference. I am not a veterinarian so please do not take the information on this page as a cure for your animals illness.  The Hoegger catalog and web site is a wonderful resource for a lot of goat medications and information. See my links page for web site address.    Illness Medications Treatment Dosage Abscesses Procaine Penicillin G Strong injectable antibiotic for treatment of upper respiratory infections, abscesses, foot rot, mastitis and infections from injuries. Adult dosage - 4 ml administered sub-Q every third day for three treatments. Anaphylactic Shock Epinephrine Treatments and vaccinations can cause anaphylaxis (Shock).  If shock occurs, administer 1cc of Epinephrine immediately.   Sub Q Injection Anemia - low red blood cell count Iron Supplement Paste AN unchecked worm infestation results in a low red blood cell count (anemia).  Give an iron supplement to stimulate appetite and restore the blood count to normal. see package directions Antidote - from poisoning Universal Antidote Gel An emergency first aid treatment of poisoning by organic chemicals, insecticides, herbicides, household chemicals and intestinal toxins from food poisoning. Contains 0.2% nitrofurazone in a water soluble base. Apply directly to affected area. Tamed Iodine Spray Ouchless antiseptic for the treatment of skin abrasions. superficial wounds, insect bites and bruises.  Valuable for site preparation prior to castration and other surgical procedures. Apply directly to affected area. Coccidiosis Di-Methox 40% Use to prevent coccidiosis. Start treatment at 3 weeks of age, 1/2 cc orally twice daily for 1 week (14 doses total) and 1/2 cc dose once a week until weaned. Sour Mouth (Ovine Ecthyma) Sore Mouth Vaccine Sore mouth is a contagious disease caused by a virus.  Most commonly seen as sores and scabs on the lips or the skin.  If untreated the condition will clear up in about 2 weeks with permanent immunity.  Sore Mouth Vaccine is approved for goats and is recommended for use where the infection is already present. Vaccinating goats that have been exposed to the virus will not completely eliminate the chance of those animals still getting sore mouth, but will greatly reduce the severity of the outbreak should it occur.  see package directions  Careful handling of the vaccine to avoid contamination will permit you to economize by freezing unused portions. Udder Care Dr Naylor's Udder Balm   Antiseptic ointment for relieving soreness in udders and teats.   Frost Protection Udder Balm Protection from harmful temperature extremes.   Urinary Tract - Calculi Ammonium Chloride Prevention & treatment of Calculi in bucks, difficult urination indicated by stretching and straining to urinate with little or no success.. Prevention by adding   2 1/2 lbs to 25lbs loose minerals and treatment by oral drenching 1 1/2 tsp mixed in small amount of liquid for 7-10 days.  Providing fresh water, free choice minerals, grass hay and seasonal browse will help prevent this problem.  Over graining should be avoided.
